The European government has made an SSL-certificate mandatory for your website. Does your website already have an SSL-certificate?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires all websites with a form to protect their visitors with an SSL certificate. With an SSL certificate you show the users that your website is safe. A website that is secured with an SSL certificate can be recognized by a number of things:
In case the URL of the website starts with a HTTPS:// code, than the user knows that the website is secured with an SSL certificate.
In case your website is EV-SSL certified, the user will see a green address bar and the name of the company will be shown in the address bar. EV-SSL is a certificate that gives the user extra signals that a website is secure.
If an SSL certificate is active, a lock appears in the address bar of the user.
When clicking the lock, the user receives additional information about the applicant of the certificate in a drop-down menu.
Which SSL certificates can you get?
DV SSL
A DV (Domain Validation) SSL is the simplest SSL certificate. This certificate ensures that the data of your website gets secured and encrypted so that the data of your website are protected against cybercrime attacks. It is a very fast way to protect your website with HTTPS encryption. Users who see the lock in the address bar immediately know that your website is reliable. Please note: with a DV SSL certificate, it is not validated whether the company behind the website is a legitimate company. This means that criminal companies also can use a DV SSL certificate.
Example DV SSL
EV SSL
An EV SSL certificate is necessary for companies that store sensitive data from customers. For example, credit card number and contact details. Valid company data is checked when the SSL certificate gets installed. Online stores and e-commerce sites are required to take an EV SSL validation. The validation process is so extensive that fraudsters cannot be in possession of an EV SSL certificate. Visually, the EV SSL differs from the DV SSL by means of the name of the company in the address bar.
Example EV SSL
There are a number of reasons why you should take an SSL certificate:
Websites that have an SSL certificate are better ranked by Google. This means that more visitors will end up on your website via Google.
An SSL certificate ensures that you can send important data encrypted such as passwords, credit card numbers and personal data. That way you protect yourself and your customers against hackers.
Because customers can visually see that your website is secured with an SSL certificate, your customers will trust your website and they will purchase your products.
Companies are required by the law to protect personal data properly. With an SSL certificate you ensure that the data of your customers are well protected.
